4. Before I Die...

The speech that I watched and found the most interesting is Candy Chang’s “Before I die I want to…” Candy Chang is an artist, designer, and urban planner who explores making cities more comfortable and contemplative places.
Chang has created over 30 street art and community projects that help people to be able to share their hopes, dreams and secrets in public space. This speech “ Before I die I want to…” is about how powerful our public space can be when the opportunity  to share their feeling and thinking with others and how it positively effects on our communities to make them better places to be is provided to people.

Chang started the speech with her opening statement, “ There are a lot of ways people around us can help and improve our lives.” When I heard her opening statement, her voice totally grabbed my attention because she didn’t raise her voice or try to give the audience a comedic statement to grab their attention. Chang gave her speech with her calm and trustful voice through the entire presentation. I think she tried to narrate her experience and story to really touch audiences’ hearts and communicate who she is with audiences through her calm voice.

Chang also shared her feeling with audiences. When she talked about her mother Joan, who suddenly passed away in 2009, her eyes were filled with tears. She tried to commune with audiences with not only giving a speech but also sharing her true feeling. I believe that I could feel what she felt when she created her project “ Before I die I want to…” for her mother in her hometown New Orleans.

Chang’s “ Before I die…” is the creative community project where she transformed an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans into an interactive wall for people to share their hopes and dreams. After her mother’s death, she started thinking about what death means to us. In her speech, she said “ Death is something that we’re often discouraged to talk about or even think about, but I’ve realized that preparing for death is one of the most empowering things you can do. Thinking about death clarifies your life.” After a day, people started writing their wishes and dreams on the wall and sharing their feelings. I think that people could truly open their minds from the word “ Die” because they could realize how important and precious their lives are. Now, the project “ Before I die…” has spread across the world.

I’ve been thinking about why SNS is so popular and addictive. After Chang’s speech, I think I might have a little clue about why SNS has became the most powerful tool to communicate with people these days. Back a past few decades, people actually communicated with others face-to-face and spent time with others to interact and share feelings. However, people have became isolated with huge development of technologies and the Internet these days. People no longer need to go out to communicate with others, get information and interact with someone in their lives. I think because of this lack of these emotion situations, people started looking for the public space that they could share their feelings. SNS became the tool that they could use to interact with others just like the wall of “ Before I die…”

Chang’s speech truly inspired me when she closed her presentation with the statement, “ More ways to share hopes, fears and stories, people around us not only help us make better places, they can help us live better lives.” In order to succeed in the entertainment field, I need to share my feelings and ideas with others to touch their minds and emotions because I believe the key of success in the entertainment field will be the interaction, communication and sharing our feelings with customers.
